Summary (from the book jacket)

Everyone believed vampires were extinct.  Everyone was wrong.

When Ariel Swanson wrote a novel about vampires, she hoped it would exorcise her fear of the creatures that had, not so long ago, terrorized the human population.  Instead, it brought her to their attention.

And to the attention of Jachin Black—a man banished from the Sanguinas, a vampire pack, and forced to hunt among the despised humans. For he clung to the prophecy given years ago, of a better way for his kind to live - a prophecy Ariel unknowingly used as the basis of her novel.

Ariel hates and fears vampires. Jachin despises humanity. But the prophesy - and passion - binds them in ways they could never have imagined. Ways that may heal the past, and change the future….

The Review

Scions: Resurrection is the first novel in a new paranormal romance series by Patrice Michelle published under the Silhouette Nocturne imprint.  Patrice Michelle has written plenty of romances, both paranormal and contemporary, prior to this book for Ellora’s Cave - and this romance writing experience shows in Scions: Resurrection.

The author wastes no time at the start of the novel, dropping the reader straight into an assassination and fire fight and quickly following it up with a kidnapping, daring rooftop chases and more shooting and explosions.  And that’s just the first two chapters!  This fast paced excitement continues throughout the story as Jachin and his reluctant captive, Ariel, try to stay one step ahead of vampires hunters, homicidal vampires and werewolves who are all out for their blood.

Along the way Jachin and Ariel find they have a mutual attraction for each other but with so many obstacles between them, not least Ariel’s fear and mistrust of vampires - along with Jachin’s desire to deliver her to Braeden (the leader of his old vampire clan) so she can become his mate and fulfil the prophecy – there is plenty of fuel for romantic relationship development between their characters.

Scions: Resurrection has some new ideas in its vampire mythology.  Probably the greatest departure from traditional vampire stereotypes is that these vampires are not undead but living creatures.  They were created through illegal genetic experiments on humans; the results of those experiments later bred with each other and created a second generation of living vampires.

Advanced genetic experimentation combined with the use of lasers and pulsar pistols give Scions: Resurrection a futuristic feel although other elements of the novel seem to have a contemporary timeframe.  My one gripe with this novel is that it isn’t really clear what timeframe this novel is set in, combined with some other world building elements have been given a very quick brush over – whether they are explained more clearly in later instalments of the Scions series remains to be seen.  (This really is only a small gripe so I really wouldn’t let it put you off reading the book if you feel so inclined!)

Both Scions: Resurrection and Patrice Michelle are a strong addition to the Silhouette Nocturne imprint.  This novel’s fast paced action plot line combined with its spicy romance and fantasy thrills should be just what romance readers have been looking for.
